Flat washers are used to increase the surface area of the fastener and therfore distributing the force more evenly across the fastened surface. These washers are finished in a bright zinc plating, which helps to prevent the steel from corrosion and provides a bright finish. They can also be used as spacers due to them being flat on both sides.
